Before you measure

  • Set browser zoom to 100%. Zoom scales pixel counts and will skew the result.
  • On Windows, put pointer speed at the middle notch (6 of 11) and turn off "Enhance pointer precision".
  • Turn off any in-driver sensitivity multiplier in your mouse software.
  • Lay a ruler on your mousepad and mark the start and end of the distance you chose.
  • Drag slowly in a straight horizontal line. Speed does not matter, straightness does.

No website can read your DPI straight from the hardware. What it can do is count the pixels your cursor travels while you move the mouse a distance you measure with a ruler — and that gives you the real number, including any driver or OS setting sitting on top of it.

How this Mouse DPI Checker works

DPI, or more correctly CPI, is how many steps your mouse sensor reports for every inch it travels. It lives in the mouse firmware, and no browser API exposes it — which is why this tool measures it rather than reading it.

The method is simple arithmetic. You tell the tool how far you are about to move the mouse, measure that distance on your mousepad with a ruler, then drag while the page counts how many pixels the cursor moved. Pixels divided by inches is your DPI. Move two inches and see 1600 pixels counted, and you are running at 800 DPI.

To make the count reliable the tool locks the pointer while you drag. Without that lock the cursor stops at the edge of your screen and the count stops with it, which matters because a 3200 DPI mouse moving two inches covers 6400 pixels — wider than most displays. Where the browser supports it, the tool also requests movement data with the operating system's pointer acceleration removed, so your Windows or macOS pointer speed does not distort the reading. It reports which of the two modes it managed to get.

Three things commonly skew a measurement, and all of them are worth checking before you trust a number: browser zoom other than 100 percent, a Windows pointer speed that is not on the middle notch, and "Enhance pointer precision", which makes cursor distance depend on how fast you move rather than how far. Because a single hand-drag is never perfect, the tool keeps every attempt and averages them — three or four runs give a far better figure than one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a website read my mouse DPI directly?
No. DPI is a property of the mouse sensor and there is no browser API that exposes it. This tool measures it indirectly instead: you move the mouse a distance you have measured, it counts the pixels the cursor travelled, and dividing one by the other gives the DPI.
How accurate is this?
It is as accurate as your ruler and your drag. A short, wobbly drag over one inch can be off by a fair margin; a careful four-inch drag repeated three or four times usually lands within a few percent of the real figure. That is why the tool keeps a running average.
Why does my result not match the DPI I set?
Usually one of three things is scaling it. Browser zoom other than 100% changes the pixel count, Windows pointer speed away from the middle notch multiplies cursor movement, and "Enhance pointer precision" makes movement depend on how fast you drag. Sensor accuracy also varies between mice.
What is the difference between DPI and CPI?
They describe the same thing for a mouse: how many steps the sensor reports per inch of movement. CPI, counts per inch, is the technically correct term. DPI stuck because it is what manufacturers print on the box.
What is raw pointer input?
Chromium browsers can supply pointer movement with the operating system’s acceleration curve removed. When that is available this tool uses it, which makes the reading independent of your pointer speed settings. The tool tells you which mode it got.
Does a higher DPI make me better at games?
Not by itself. What matters is effective sensitivity, your DPI multiplied by in-game sensitivity, and whether it is consistent enough to build muscle memory. Many professional players use 400 to 1600 DPI rather than the highest setting their mouse offers.
Why press Esc to finish?
The tool locks the pointer while measuring so it can keep counting movement even when the cursor would otherwise stop at the edge of the screen. Esc is the browser’s standard way to release that lock, and it ends the measurement.
