A random location generator that tells you what is there
This tool picks random points on Earth and describes each one. A result has a latitude and longitude, the country or body of water, and the nearest city with 150,000 or more people. You can limit the points to land or water, a continent, an ocean, a country, a box or a circle, and open any point in Google Maps, Street View or Google Earth.
It also draws every point on a world map, so you can see how the points spread. The map data loads once. Your settings and results stay in your browser.
Choose the area
Six area options cover most jobs. The last two are for areas the list does not have.
| Area | What the tool draws | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Whole planet | Points anywhere on Earth. You choose land, water or both. | Quick picks, trivia and simple tests. |
| Continent | Land points inside one of the seven continents. | Regional samples. |
| Ocean | Water points inside one of the five oceans. | Sea and ocean coordinates. |
| Country | Land points inside one country. Overseas territories are optional. | Country-level test data. |
| Box | Points between two latitudes and two longitudes. A box can cross the 180° line. | Custom regions and map tiles. |
| Radius | Points within a set distance of a center, up to 20,000 km. | Near-me tests and local samples. |
How the points are picked
Every square kilometer in the chosen area has the same chance of being picked. For the whole planet, that means the tool draws latitude so that bands near the poles are not over-represented. Plain random latitude and longitude would pile points up at the poles, and the map would show it.
Each point is rounded to your chosen number of decimal places first and checked after. The country, the sea and the distances you see belong to the exact numbers shown. If you enter a seed, the tool starts from that seed and repeats the same list. Without a seed, it starts from your browser's secure random generator.
Coordinate formats
The tool shows each point in three notations. Copy the one your other tool expects. The sample below is the Eiffel Tower.
| Format | Example | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal degrees | 48.8584, 2.2945 | Google Maps, GPS apps, databases and most APIs. |
| Degrees, minutes, seconds | 48°51′30.2″N 2°17′40.2″E | Maps, charts and printed guides. |
| Degrees, decimal minutes | 48°51.50′N 2°17.67′E | Geocaching, sailing and aviation. |
How many decimal places do you need
Each decimal place makes the position ten times finer. The sizes below are for latitude. Longitude shrinks toward the poles.
| Decimal places | Size on the ground | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 111 km | A country or a large region |
| 2 | 1.1 km | A town or a village |
| 4 | 11 m | A building or a field |
| 6 | 11 cm | Default. A single tree or a door |
| 8 | 1.1 mm | Surveying data. Far finer than any phone |
Famous places
Switch to Famous places to pick UNESCO World Heritage Sites instead of random points. The list has more than 1,100 sites, from Machu Picchu to the Great Barrier Reef. Filter by continent, country and type (cultural, natural or mixed). Each result shows the coordinates, the year the site was listed and a link to its Wikipedia article.
What people use random coordinates for
Testing location features
Maps, geofences, weather and delivery apps need positions that are not all in one city. Generate a few hundred points in a country, download CSV or GeoJSON and load them into your test database.
Sampling in GIS work
Equal-area points give an unbiased sample of a region. Use a box or a radius for a local study and set a seed so a colleague can repeat your draw.
Geography games
Draw a point, open Street View or Google Earth, and guess where you are. Pick a country with good coverage for the best rounds.
Trip ideas and trivia
Famous places gives you a heritage site to read about, with its country, its year and a link to the full article.
Settings for stories and games
A real spot with a country and a nearest city is a solid starting point for a writer or a game master.
Where the data comes from
The tool carries its own map data, so it never asks a server for a location. The data comes from three open sources and was collected in October 2026.
- Natural Earth: Country borders, coastlines and sea names. Public domain, simplified to about 3 km.
- GeoNames: Cities with 150,000 or more people. Licensed under CC BY 4.0 (geonames.org).
- Wikidata: World Heritage Sites and the Spanish and German city names. Released under CC0.
What to keep in mind
A random point can fall on private land, in a protected area or in a country where you should not go. Treat the result as a position on a map, not as an invitation. The labels are close but not exact near coasts and borders.
How the random location generator works
The generator draws random points inside the area you pick. Every square kilometer has the same chance, and you can add a seed to repeat a list.
Each point is rounded to your chosen decimal places and then checked against country and sea outlines stored in the tool. That check decides whether the point is land or water, names the country or the body of water, and finds the nearest large city or the nearest coast.
Famous places draws from a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites instead. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
How to generate a random location
Pick an area
Choose the whole planet, a continent, an ocean or a country. For anything else, type a box or a radius.
Set surface and amount
Choose land, water or both, then enter how many points you want.
Press Generate
Every point gets a dot on the map, its country or sea, and the nearest large city.
Copy, export or open
Copy one point or the whole list, download CSV, JSON, GeoJSON or KML, or open a point in Google Maps, Street View or Google Earth.
Example Usage
Three random points in Brazil. The same seed returns the same lines:
