Keeping your waist under half your height is the simple rule of thumb here. This picks up belly fat that BMI on its own can miss.

Body fat percentage reference for men

BMI and body fat percentage measure different things. Use this chart as a separate reference, not a conversion of the BMI result above.

Category thresholds follow the World Health Organization's adult BMI classification. Body fat ranges follow the American Council on Exercise classification for men, and the waist-to-height thresholds follow UK NICE guidance. This tool gives a general screening estimate, not a medical diagnosis, and every calculation runs locally in your browser.

One Number Was Never Going to Be Enough

BMI is quick, free, and useful as a first check — but it cannot tell muscle from fat, and it has no idea where you carry your weight. That is a real problem for men, who tend to store fat around the middle and often carry more muscle than the formula expects. This calculator gives you the BMI, then adds the waist-to-height ratio and a male body fat chart so the number has some context around it.

Why Use This Calculator?

Waist Ratio Catches What BMI Misses

Belly fat carries more health risk than the same weight spread elsewhere. Add your waist and you get the ratio doctors actually look at.

Male Body Fat Benchmarks

The chart uses the ranges reported for men, where a fitness-level reading sits far lower than the equivalent figure for women.

A Target Range, Not a Verdict

You see the full weight range that keeps you in the normal band at your height, in the units you already think in.

Nothing Leaves Your Browser

Your height, weight, and waist stay on your device. No account, no upload, no tracking of what you typed.

How this BMI Calculator for Men works

This calculator runs the standard BMI formula — weight in kilograms divided by height in metres, squared — and then adds the two things that formula leaves out. Type your height and weight in feet, inches and pounds, or in centimetres and kilograms. Switching between the two systems converts what you already entered, so the underlying result never shifts.

The BMI figure is matched against the World Health Organization's adult classification: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above splits into three obesity classes. Running the same formula backward gives the exact weight range that keeps you inside the normal band at your height, so you get a target instead of a verdict. Alongside it sits BMI Prime, your BMI divided by 25, which shows how far above or below the upper limit you sit as a simple ratio.

The waist field is where this calculator separates itself from a plain BMI tool. Divide your waist by your height and you get the waist-to-height ratio, a measure that picks up abdominal fat — the kind that sits near the organs and carries the most risk. UK NICE guidance treats 0.4 to 0.49 as healthy, 0.5 to 0.59 as increased risk, and 0.6 or above as high risk. A man can pass the BMI check and still fail this one, which is why both appear together, with a male body fat chart underneath. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

How to use this BMI Calculator for Men

1

Pick your units

Work in feet, inches and pounds, or in centimetres and kilograms. Switching converts the numbers you already typed, so nothing gets lost.

2

Enter height, weight, and waist

Height and weight give you the BMI. The waist field is optional, but adding it unlocks the waist-to-height ratio.

You get your BMI, its category, the healthy weight range for your height, BMI Prime, and a body fat chart based on male benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMI formula different for men?
No. Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared applies to everyone, and the World Health Organization uses the same category cut-offs for both sexes. What differs is the interpretation. Men carry more muscle and less essential fat than women at the same BMI, so this page pairs the number with a male body fat chart and a waist measurement instead of leaving you with one figure.
What is a good BMI for a man?
Anything from 18.5 to 24.9 counts as normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above splits into three obesity classes. The calculator also shows the exact weight range that keeps you inside the normal band at your height, which is more useful than a single pass-or-fail number.
I lift weights and my BMI says overweight. Should I worry?
Probably not. BMI has no way to tell muscle from fat, so a lean, muscular man with a 32-inch waist can easily land at a BMI of 27. This is the single biggest weakness of the measure. Check your waist-to-height ratio and your body fat percentage first, because those two will tell you far more than the BMI category on its own.
Why does the calculator ask for my waist?
Because where you carry weight matters as much as how much you carry. Fat around the middle sits close to the liver and other organs and is linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A man with a normal BMI and a large waist can still be at risk, and BMI alone will never flag that.
What waist-to-height ratio should a man aim for?
Keep your waist below half your height. UK NICE guidance treats 0.4 to 0.49 as the healthy band, 0.5 to 0.59 as increased risk, and 0.6 or above as high risk. For a man who is 5 ft 10 in, that means keeping the waist under roughly 35 inches.
How do I measure my waist correctly?
Measure against bare skin, not over clothing. Find the point midway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bones, which is usually about level with the belly button. Breathe out normally, keep the tape snug without pulling it tight, and take the reading. Do not suck your stomach in.
What is BMI Prime and why is it shown?
BMI Prime is simply your BMI divided by 25, the upper limit of the normal range. A value of 1.00 sits exactly on that limit, 0.92 means you are 8 per cent under it, and 1.20 means you are 20 per cent over. Some men find that ratio easier to track over time than the raw BMI figure.
Does a healthy BMI change as men get older?
The thresholds themselves do not change. What changes is body composition: muscle mass tends to drop after roughly age 40 while fat often increases, so the same BMI at 55 can represent a very different body than it did at 25. This is another reason to track waist size alongside weight rather than watching one number.
Does this calculator work out my body fat percentage?
No, and no height-and-weight tool honestly can. Body fat percentage needs a measurement method such as skinfold calipers, a bioelectrical impedance scale, or a DEXA scan. The chart on this page shows the ranges the American Council on Exercise reports for men, so you have something to compare your reading against once you have one.
Is BMI useful for athletes, bodybuilders, or very tall men?
It is a poor fit for all three groups. Athletes and bodybuilders are misclassified because of muscle mass. Very tall men tend to score higher than their build warrants, since BMI divides by height squared rather than cubed. If you fall into one of these groups, use waist-to-height ratio and body fat percentage as your main markers.
Is anything I type here sent to a server?
No. Every calculation on this page runs in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored, and there is no sign-up. Close the tab and the numbers are gone.
Can I use this result instead of seeing a doctor?
No. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It says nothing about your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, or fitness. Treat the result as a prompt for a conversation with a doctor, especially if you sit outside the normal range or your waist ratio flags increased risk.
