How this Bass Test works

This tool uses the Web Audio API built into your browser to generate pure sine tones at twelve standard low-frequency bands, from 20 Hz up to 250 Hz. These bands follow the same octave spacing that audio engineers use to test subwoofers and speakers, so the results map onto real specs rather than an arbitrary scale.

Press play on any band and the browser's audio engine generates that exact frequency in real time — nothing is streamed or downloaded. Mark each band as heard or not heard once you have listened, and the tool tracks your answers as you move down the list. When you reach a point where a tone plays but you hear nothing, that marks the lower limit of what your current speakers or headphones can reproduce.

What counts as "bass" in this test?
This tool covers roughly 20 Hz to 250 Hz, the range audio engineers usually split into sub-bass (20-60 Hz) and bass (60-250 Hz). Most music sits mostly above 40 Hz, so a setup that reaches 40-60 Hz already covers the vast majority of bass content.
Why does the same tone sound different on my phone speaker versus headphones?
Small drivers, like the ones in phones and laptops, physically cannot move enough air to reproduce very low frequencies, so they either play the tone much quieter or skip it entirely. Headphones and dedicated speakers use larger drivers or a subwoofer built to handle that range.
