What Each Surround Channel Should Sound Like
Play the channels one at a time and match what you hear to the speaker position on the room map. If a tone plays from the wrong direction, the cable or channel assignment for that speaker is usually swapped.
Front left and front right
The main stereo pair. Both should play at the same volume from the front corners. These work even on a plain stereo setup.
Center channel
Sits above or below the screen and carries most movie dialogue. If speech in films sounds thin or buried, test this channel first.
Subwoofer (LFE)
Plays a 40 Hz tone that you feel as much as hear. Small desktop speakers may not reproduce it at all, which is normal.
Rear left and rear right

How to Read Your Surround Test Results
- Every tone comes from the front two speakers: your browser is sending stereo. Check that the system output device is your receiver or HDMI connection and that the operating system is set to 5.1 or 7.1, not stereo.
- One channel is silent: check the speaker cable at both ends, then the channel assignment on the receiver. Swap the cable with a working speaker to find out whether the fault is the speaker or the amplifier output.
- A tone plays from the wrong position: two cables are swapped. Trace the wiring for the two affected speakers, or fix the assignment in the receiver or sound card control panel.
- The subwoofer stays silent: confirm the sub is powered on and not in standby, raise its gain slightly, and check the crossover and LFE settings on the receiver.
- Surround channels sound faint: rear and side speakers are often set several decibels too low. Use the receiver's channel level calibration to bring them in line with the fronts.

When you tap a speaker, the tool builds a short signal chain: a sine wave oscillator feeds a gain node, and the gain node connects to one input of a ChannelMergerNode that matches your chosen layout. If enough output channels are available, the destination switches to explicit channel counting with discrete interpretation, so the tone reaches only the speaker you picked — nothing bleeds into the others. Front and surround channels play a 440 Hz tone, the center uses 550 Hz so it stands apart, and the subwoofer test drops to 40 Hz, low enough that you feel it more than hear it. On a stereo-only device the tool falls back to the browser's standard speaker mixing, so every test stays audible while the notice explains the downmix. The play-all sequence steps through the layout on a 1.8 second timer, the volume slider adjusts the gain node live, and every tone is generated locally — nothing is recorded or uploaded.
