How this Internet Speed Test works

When you press start, the test runs in three stages, all inside your browser tab. First it checks latency. The tool sends a burst of tiny requests to a nearby server on Cloudflare's network and times each round trip. The middle value becomes your ping, and the variation between trips becomes your jitter. The very first request is thrown away, because opening a fresh connection always takes a little longer than the ones that follow.

Next comes the download stage. Your browser requests files that grow from a couple of megabytes to tens of megabytes and counts the data as it streams in, chunk by chunk. Dividing bytes received by time elapsed gives your download speed, which updates live on screen. The growing sizes matter: a small file finishes before a fast connection has reached full speed, so the test keeps pulling larger ones for several seconds until the reading settles.

The upload stage works the same way in reverse. The tool builds blocks of random data in memory and sends them to the test server, measuring speed from the progress reports your browser fires as the data leaves.

How accurate is a browser-based speed test?
Accurate enough to answer the questions that matter: is my connection healthy, and is it delivering roughly what I pay for. Your device, browser, and Wi-Fi all add a little overhead, so a wired desktop will usually score a few percent higher than a phone across the room. For the cleanest reading, use an ethernet cable, close downloads and video tabs, and run the test two or three times.
Why is my result lower than the speed my provider advertises?
Providers quote an "up to" speed measured at the modem over a cable. By the time the signal has crossed your router, a few walls, and a shared Wi-Fi channel, some of it is gone. Other devices on your network and busy evening hours take another slice. A result around 80 to 90 percent of the advertised speed over ethernet is normal; far less than that is worth a call to your provider.
What is a good internet speed?
