Turn a PDF into text you can actually use

A PDF is built for reading, not editing. The moment you need to search the content, paste it somewhere else, or read it on a device that can't open PDFs, plain text is what you actually need. This tool pulls that text out in seconds, page by page, without an upload.

Why use this PDF to TXT converter?

Reads every page

Multi-page PDFs are processed page by page, with an optional marker between each one so you can tell where a page ends.

Nothing is uploaded

The file is opened and read directly in your browser. It never touches a server, so private documents stay private.

Editable before you save it

Fix a line, remove a header, or clean up spacing in the preview box before you copy or download the result.

Free with no limits

No account, no sign-up, and no cap on how many PDFs you convert.

How this PDF to TXT Converter works

A PDF doesn't store a paragraph of text the way a text editor does. It stores the shape and position of every individual character on the page, the way a printer places ink. To pull readable text back out, this tool reads that position data one page at a time, using the same open-source engine that renders PDFs inside Firefox.

For each page, every character's coordinates are collected and grouped into rows based on how far down the page they sit. Within a row, the characters are sorted left to right and joined into a line. Stack those lines from top to bottom and repeat for every page, and the result reads close to the original layout for normal, single-column documents such as letters, reports, or articles.

This method has one clear limit: it only works on PDFs that already contain real, selectable text. A scanned page is really a photograph saved inside a PDF, with no character data behind it, so there's nothing for this tool to read. Recognising text in a scanned image needs a separate process called OCR, which isn't part of what this tool does — trying to run untrusted scripts against a scanned page on a server would also be a security risk, so this stays a pure text-layer extractor.

Every step happens on your device. The PDF is opened, read, and converted in your browser, then it's gone the moment you close the tab. Nothing is uploaded, so the file and its contents stay private throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool keep the original formatting of my PDF?
No, and that's by design. A .txt file can only hold characters and line breaks, not fonts, columns, or images. Headings and paragraphs come through as plain lines of text, in roughly the order they appear on the page.
Will this work on a scanned document or a photo of a page?
Only if the PDF already has selectable text behind the image. Scanned pages without a text layer need optical character recognition (OCR) first, which this tool doesn't do. Try selecting text in the PDF with your cursor first — if nothing highlights, there's no text to pull out.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and processed entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. It's never sent anywhere, which makes this a safe option for contracts, statements, or anything else you'd rather keep private.
Is there a limit on file size or number of pages?
The tool itself doesn't cap the size, but very large PDFs — several hundred pages, or a large file size — take longer to process and use more of your device's memory, since everything runs on your machine instead of a server.
Why does some text come out jumbled or in the wrong order?
PDFs don't store text in reading order, they store the position of every character on the page. This tool groups characters into rows by their vertical position and sorts each row left to right, which works well for normal paragraphs but can mix up multi-column layouts, tables, or unusual page designs.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
You'll need to remove the password first, since a browser can't read an encrypted file without it. Open the PDF with the password, save an unprotected copy, and this tool can process that copy normally.
What can I do with the .txt file afterward?
Anything you would do with plain text: paste it into a document, run a word count, search it, feed it into another tool, or read it on a device that has no PDF viewer. A .txt file opens on virtually any computer or phone without extra software.
Does this work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It runs entirely in the browser, so it works on any device that can open a webpage and pick a file, phones and tablets included, though very long PDFs process faster on a computer.
Why is there extra spacing or a missing line break in my result?
PDF text doesn't always include a marker for paragraph breaks the way a word processor file does. This tool adds a line break wherever it detects a new row of text on the page, but tightly spaced lines or unusual fonts can occasionally throw that off.
Do I need an account or a payment to use this?
No. It's free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert.
Can I edit the text before downloading it?
Yes. The extracted text appears in an editable box, so you can fix a line, delete a section, or clean up spacing before you copy it or save the .txt file.
