OC names for every kind of character

An OC is an original character: a person, pony or creature you make up yourself instead of taking one from a show or a game. This OC name generator gives you names that fit the world your character lives in. Pick a genre such as anime, fantasy or sci-fi, or pick a fandom pattern if your OC belongs to a series such as My Little Pony, Cookie Run Kingdom or My Hero Academia.

Each name comes with a short profile: two personality traits, a role in the story and four colors. Use the profile to start a reference sheet, a bio or your next drawing, and change any part of it later.

Character name styles and fandom patterns

Genres join a first name and a last name from lists written for each genre. Fandom patterns copy the naming habit of each series and leave out the names of characters the series already has.

From a name to an OC idea

A name is easier to judge when you can picture the character. With Show personality, role and colors turned on, every card adds two traits, a role in the story and a palette with hair, eye, outfit and accent colors. MLP Pony cards show coat and mane instead, and Sonic cards show fur and shoes.

Some patterns add one more detail. MHA Hero names get a power and a civilian name. Demon Slayer names get a breathing style. MLP Pony names get a pony type and an idea for a mark, Cookie Run names get a class, and Digital Circus names get a costume theme.

The profile belongs to the name. Generate the same name again or open it from your saved names, and you get the same traits and colors. Click a color to copy its hex code for your drawing app.

Tips for choosing a good OC name

Say it out loud

A name you cannot pronounce is hard to use in a story or a roleplay chat. Say it a few times. If you stumble over it, pick another one.

Match the setting

A knight called Tyler and an office worker called Thessaly Frostmere both feel wrong. Pick the genre that matches the world first, then the name.

Check the fandom wiki

The tool filters out the names of known characters, but no list covers every minor or new character. Search the full name on the fandom wiki before you post your OC.

Think about the nickname

Look at what the name shortens to. Other fans often use the short form, so make sure you like it too.

How the OC name generator builds names

The generator works from lists written for each style. Genre names join a first name and a last name. Fandom patterns follow the naming habit of their series, such as two words for a pony or an alias and a power for a hero. Before a name is shown, the tool checks it against a list of known characters from that series and drops any match.

The gender, letter and name part settings filter the lists before the draw, and no name appears twice in one set. The personality, role and colors come from the name itself, so the same name always gets the same profile. Everything runs in your browser. Saved names stay in the storage of your browser and are never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OC?
OC means original character. It is a character you create yourself, for your own story or inside an existing fandom. A My Little Pony OC, for example, is a pony that does not appear in the show.
Can I get female or male OC names?
Yes. Set Gender to Female, Male or Gender-neutral. Any mixes all three. The MLP Pony, Cookie Run and Digital Circus patterns have no gender, so the setting is turned off for them.
How do I make a name for a My Little Pony or Cookie Run OC?
Choose MLP Pony or Cookie Run under Fandom naming pattern. Pony names are two words, such as Maple Trail. Cookie names join a flavor and a treat, such as Yuzu Mochi Cookie. Each pony card also suggests a pony type and a mark, and each Cookie card suggests a class.
Do you have names for My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer or Sonic OCs?
Yes. MHA Hero gives a hero alias, a power and a civilian name. Demon Slayer gives a Japanese name and a breathing style that the series does not use, such as Frost Breathing. Sonic builds names such as Juniper the Fennec. Digital Circus gives one playful word for an Amazing Digital Circus OC.
Will I get the name of a character who already exists?
The tool removes the names of known characters before it shows a result, for example Twilight Sparkle, Red Riot and Pomni. No list covers every minor or new character, so search the full name on the fandom wiki before you publish your OC.
What do the personality, role and colors mean?
They are prompts, not rules. Two traits and a role give you a place to start the bio. The four colors give you a first palette for the design. Clear Show personality, role and colors if you only want names.
Can I get OC names that start with a certain letter?
Yes. Open More options and choose a letter under Starts with. The menu lists only the letters that have names in your style, with the number of names for each.
Can I get only a first name or a last name?
Yes, for the genre styles. Open More options and set Name part to First name or Last name. Fandom patterns always give the whole name.
Can I use these names in my story, art or game?
Yes. The names are free to use in fan art, stories, roleplay and games, and we claim no rights to them. If you plan to sell a book or a product under the name, search it first to make sure no one uses it as a brand.
Is this an official tool for these series?
No. This is an unofficial fan tool. My Little Pony, Cookie Run, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Sonic the Hedgehog and The Amazing Digital Circus belong to their owners. The tool only follows the way names in these series are built.
Are my saved names stored anywhere?
Everything runs in your browser. Saved names stay in the storage of your browser on this device and are never uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes them.
