How this Broken Link Checker works

This broken link checker scans one webpage at a time. Enter a URL, and the tool fetches that page's HTML, reads through every anchor tag, and builds a full list of links, both the ones pointing to other pages on your own site and the ones pointing out to other websites.

Each link is then requested on its own to see how the destination responds. A link that loads normally is marked as working. A link that returns a 404 or another error code is marked as broken. A link that redirects to a new address is marked as redirected, with the new destination shown next to it. Requests that time out or fail to connect are flagged too, since an unreachable page is just as much a problem for visitors as a dead one.

Results are grouped by status so you can see the scale of the issue at a glance: how many links work, how many redirect, and how many are broken. Each row also notes whether the link is internal or external, which helps you decide whether to fix the URL yourself or contact another site owner about it.

What counts as a broken link?
A broken link is any link that fails to load its destination. That usually means the server returns a 404 Not Found or another 4xx/5xx error, the domain no longer resolves, or the request times out. This tool flags each of these cases separately so you know exactly what went wrong.
Why do broken links hurt my website?
Broken links send visitors to dead ends, which increases bounce rate and damages trust. They also waste crawl budget and can weaken the SEO value passed between pages, since search engines cannot follow a link that goes nowhere.
Does this tool check the whole website or just one page?
