Your image is decoded in the browser with EXIF rotation applied, so photos taken on a phone stay upright. It is then drawn onto a hidden canvas at a fraction of its original size, set by the resolution scale slider. Detail that does not survive that squash is gone for good, which is where most of the degradation comes from.

If grain is turned up, random noise is mixed into the pixels while the image is still small, so the noise ends up the same size as the pixel blocks. The small canvas is then drawn back up to the output size. Blocky resampling turns off pixel smoothing so every shrunken pixel becomes a hard square; smooth resampling blends them into a blur instead. The deep fry slider applies a saturation and contrast filter during that final draw.

The result is encoded with the quality you picked, or with a quality found by binary search if you set a target file size. Extra recompress passes decode and re-save the file repeatedly to compound the artefacts, the same generation loss that degrades an image reposted over and over. The preview renders at a reduced resolution to keep slider dragging smooth, and the full-resolution version is built when you download.

Comment utiliser Générateur d'image de mauvaise qualité

1

Add your images

Drag files onto the upload area or click to browse. You can queue up to ten at once.

2

Pick a preset or dial it in

Start from Deep Fried Meme or Potato Quality, then adjust quality, resolution scale, blockiness, grain, and recompress passes until it looks right.

3

Compare and download

Drag the compare handle to check the result against the original, then download the file or grab everything as a ZIP.

Questions fréquentes

Why would anyone want to make an image look low quality?
Memes are the obvious one — the "deep fried" aesthetic is built on crushed JPEG quality and blown-out colour. Beyond that: testing how an app handles poor input, building retro and lo-fi art, shrinking a file to fit a strict upload limit, and demonstrating compression artefacts when teaching how image formats work.
What is the difference between blocky and smooth resampling?
Blocky uses nearest-neighbour scaling, so each shrunken pixel is redrawn as a hard square. That is true pixelation, the look you get from old game sprites. Smooth blends neighbouring pixels together instead, which reads as a soft blur. Blocky is the default because it is what most people mean by "pixelated".
What do recompress passes actually do?
Each pass decodes the image and saves it again at the same quality. JPEG throws away a little more detail every time it is saved, so the artefacts compound. This is called generation loss, and it is why an image reposted across the internet for years looks progressively worse. Two to four passes is usually plenty.
How does the target file size option work?
Enter a size in kilobytes and the tool binary searches the encoder quality until the result fits under it, usually within eight attempts. The quality slider is locked while this is on and shows the value it settled on. It is not available for PNG, which is lossless and has no quality dial.
Which output format should I pick?
JPEG for the classic artefact look and the smallest files. WebP if you want heavy compression but need transparency preserved. PNG when you have used blocky resampling and want those hard pixel edges saved exactly as they are, without any extra compression noise.
What happens to transparent areas?
PNG and WebP keep transparency untouched. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are flattened onto the background colour you choose — white by default. Pick a different colour with the swatch if white is wrong for your image.
Can I get a genuinely smaller image, not just a worse-looking one?
Yes. By default the image is stretched back up to its original width and height so it stays a drop-in replacement. Turn on "Keep the reduced dimensions" to save at the shrunken pixel size instead, which cuts the file size much further.
What image formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF — anything your browser can decode. SVG is deliberately rejected: browsers rasterize vector files at inconsistent sizes and it often produced blank output, so export to PNG first.
Is there a limit on image size?
Files must be under 25 MB and under 40 megapixels, and you can queue ten at a time. Larger images are rejected with a message rather than freezing the page. The live preview also renders at a reduced resolution so dragging the sliders stays responsive; the full-resolution version is rendered when you download.
Does the tool upload my image to a server?
No. Decoding, degrading, and encoding all happen in your browser through the HTML5 canvas API. Your image never leaves your device, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
What settings give the classic meme look?
Use the Deep Fried Meme preset, or set quality to about 5, resolution scale around 60%, deep fry near 85, and four recompress passes. For the "potato quality" variant instead, drop the resolution scale to 10-15% with blocky resampling.
Can I process several images at once?
Yes. Drop in up to ten files and the same settings are applied to all of them. Each one gets its own result card, and the Download all as ZIP button packages them together.
